Former Grawemeyer Award winner in education named the 2017 Jefferson Lecturer in the Humanities

Martha Nussbaum, world-renowned philosopher, author, law professor and former Grawemeyer Award winner in education is scheduled to deliver the 2017 Jefferson Lecture in Humanities at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts on Monday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. According to a press release from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Jefferson Lecture is the highest honor the federal government bestows for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities.

 

Nussbaum is the 2002 recipient of the Grawemeyer Award in education. She received this designation for her book “Cultivating Humanity: A Classical Defense of Reform in Liberal Education,” in which she contends a liberal education would make students that can think critically for themselves while being open to others’ perspectives.
