Grawemeyer Award Categories


The Grawemeyer Award in Education was the third award established. The first Grawemeyer Education Award was presented in 1989. The winner was Bertrand Schwartz of Paris, France, for his idea "The Social and Vocational Preparation of Disadvantaged Young People and Experiments in New Qualifications." Read more

The Grawemeyer Award For Ideas Improving World Order is presented annually to the winner of a competition designed to stimulate the recognition, dissemination and critical analysis of outstanding proposals for improving world order. Read more

Music Composition

The Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition offers an international prize in recognition of outstanding achievement by a living composer in a large musical genre: choral, orchestral, chamber, electronic, song-cycle, dance, opera, musical theater, extended solo work and more. The award will be granted for a work premiered during the five-year period prior to the award date. Read more


The Grawemeyer Award for Psycholgy recognizes outstanding ideas in all areas of the discipline of Psychology. Nominations are judged on the basis of originality, creativity, scientific merit, and breadth of impact on the field of Psychology. Read more


The Grawemeyer Award in Religion honors and publicizes insights into the relationship between human beings and the divine and the ways this relationship may empower human beings to attain wholeness, integrity or meaning. The religion award is given jointly by the University of Louisville and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Read more
